Stopplikt

Duty to stop

Vägmärket anger att du har stopplikt före infart på korsande väg, led eller spårområde. När du har stopplikt så måste du stanna helt och lämna företräde. Detta gäller oavsett om det kommer någon trafik på den korsande vägen eller inte. Reglerna är utformade på detta sätt för att säkerställa att förare som har stopplikt verkligen tar sig tid att kontrollera trafiken innan de kör ut. I första hand ska du stanna vid stopplinjen, saknas en sådan ska du istället stanna precis innan du kör ut på vägen - där du syns och har fri sikt (men inte på den korsande körbanan). Du får bara köra ut om det kan ske utan fara och utan att hindra andra. Observera att både en polismans tecken och trafiksignaler gäller före vägmärken. Du behöver alltså inte stanna och lämna företräde om en polisman vinkar fram dig eller om en trafiksignal lyser med en grön signal i anslutning till vägmärket.

If the road sign "Stop" is posted before a junction, you must stop completely and give way before proceeding. This applies regardless of whether there is any traffic on the intersecting road or not. The rules are designed in this way to ensure that drivers who have a duty to stop really do so and check traffic both ways before proceeding When you have a duty to stop, you should do so at the stop line or, if there is no line, just before, but not on, the intersecting road – where you can be clearly seen and have a clear view. You may only proceed when you can do so without endangering or obstructing other road users. Note that both police officers' signals and traffic signals apply before road signs. If you approach a junction and a police officer signals for you to continue, you must follow the officer's signal, even if the traffic light is red or there is a stop sign. You must still drive carefully and pay attention to other traffic.
